Strategically located at the junction of a number of mass relays leading to various parts of the galaxy, the Citadel quickly became a hub of activity. The station was chosen to house the Citadel Council, thereby cementing its importance in the galactic community. It is accepted to be the political and cultural heart of Citadel space, the unofficial name given to all systems that fall under the Citadel species' control.
Even after thousands of years of occupation, the Citadel retains many secrets. The precise age of the station is not known, nor what resilient material it is constructed from. The location of the Citadel's core and its master control unit, regulating systems such as life support and navigation, remain hidden.

The Citadel is divided into several districts. Known districts include:
A1. Liðvarð District.
A district controlled by the VlRs. An ongoing war between Breis and Diluvians in a neighboring district in 2183 forced merchants and customers alike to move their business over to the relative stability of this district.
A2. Envmod District.
A district located near several vital Citadel utility systems, including a water treatment facility, the main ventilation system, and the station's central support column.
A3. FLX District.
A residential area in the lower levels of Citadel accessible by shuttle, notable for being the location of the Citadel Clinic. Once policed by the Blue Suns, the district fell into chaos after being quarantined to prevent the spread of an unknown plague in 2185.
B1. Tysk Raider District.
Another residential area that borders FLX District. You can find here The Tali Academy, founded in 2176, is the Alliance's premier school for young human biotics.
B2. Oxynucid District.
A commercial area filled with shops and businesses, including Oxynucid District Storage, that is located near Citadel's Bunker. The Cosmonauts fortified this area during their occupation in 2186.
B3. Promising/Youngster District.
Also known as pleasure district or love district, is a part of an urban area where a concentration of prostitution and sex-oriented businesses, such as sex shops, strip clubs, and adult theaters, are found.
